The mission of St. William of York Catholic School is to facilitate the formation of the whole child: heart, soul, mind, and strength by means of academic excellence, personalized attention, and an authentic Catholic culture.
PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
The St. William of York Catholic School philosophy of education echoes the voice of the Church in her perennial teaching on the nature and dignity of the human person. Created in God’s image and likeness, every child entrusted to us is a child of God, called to eternal friendship with Jesus Christ.
We embrace the Church’s call for all Catholic schools to join parents as primary educators, providing an integral formation that cultivates and nourishes the moral, spiritual, intellectual, and physical needs of elementary age children.
We believe this formation is facilitated most effectively in a school environment animated by an authentic Catholic culture in which the daily life of the student is united to the life of Christ and His Church. As a family united as disciples of Christ, we foster a school community that collaborates in the queen virtue of charity (caritas) to build this culture with constant exposure to Goodness, Truth, and Beauty.
Adhering to diocesan curriculum guidelines, we are committed to choosing resources that align with Church teaching and build a Christian moral imagination and world view, and we choose methods that reflect the enduring tradition of sound Catholic educational approaches. Imitation, modelling, memorization, relevance, multi-sensory methods, and repetition are key principles that guide our pedagogy and help teachers motivate and engage their students. With special emphasis on spoken and written language development, we believe that teaching students how to think and communicate, in possession of Truth, will build a vital foundation for life and leadership.
Under the mantle of Mary, Seat of Wisdom, we hold the conviction that forming students in wisdom and virtue is not only our first duty but the pre-requisite for them to be truly happy and to discern and live out their unique vocations in life. Relying on the patronage of St. William of York and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton (diocesan co-patron and the patron of Catholic schools), we pledge to employ all our gifts to form complete children of God, united with Christ, in mission to the world.
